HOW TO COMMISSION BESPOKE FURNITURE OR JOINERY
Commissioning a piece of bespoke furniture or joinery can seem a little intimidating at first, but it is an exciting and rewarding process, where your ideas are brought to life in the shape of a unique piece that perfectly fits your home and your requirements.
STEP 1 – GET IN CONTACT
Contact Dan by phone, email or visit the workshop and give a brief description of what you are looking for. You may know exactly what you want or have only a vague idea or concept.
Step 2 – Initial Consultation
Dan will then arrange to meet with you to discuss your requirements, preferably in your home, to see the space in which the piece is to be situated. You can share any inspiring pictures you have found in books, magazines, online or even your own sketch (though this is not essential). This is also a good time to discuss materials, budget and timescale.
STEP 3 – DESIGN
Initial concept sketches are prepared for you along with an estimate of costs and these can be sent to you via email or discussed at a subsequent meeting. Your feedback is invaluable at this stage and based on your comments and ideas, Dan will make any necessary changes. When the final design is agreed Dan will provide you with 3D and/or scale design drawings.
STEP 4 – PAYMENT OF DEPOSIT
Once a final design is agreed, Dan will give you a fixed quote, payment terms and an estimated timescale. An upfront deposit is usually required to cover materials + 50% of the labour costs, with the balance to be paid on delivery. For larger projects staged payments can be negotiated. When your deposit is received, your place in Dan’s work schedule is confirmed and you will be given an estimated delivery date. Dan will attempt to complete the project by this date, however bespoke builds take as long as they take!
STEP 5 – CONSTRUCTION
Your piece of bespoke furniture or joinery will be handmade by Dan at his workshop in St Columb Major. During the construction stage you are welcome to contact Dan to arrange a time to visit the workshop to see your design come to life! Bespoke projects often take a week or two longer than Dan’s initial estimate (sometimes more), however if this is the case you are not charged any extra!
STEP 6 – DELIVERY AND FINAL PAYMENT
Once completed, Dan will usually deliver your new piece, help you position it in your home and with your permission take photos for his portfolio. The outstanding balance will not be due for payment until the delivery day.
